NJ Boiler License Requirements

New Jersey requires anyone who operates a boiler to hold a valid license issued by the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development. This ensures operators have the proper training and experience to manage equipment safely. Licenses are structured in levels, with each level based on the size, type, and pressure of the boiler. More advanced licenses are required for operating complex equipment or taking on supervisory roles, providing a clear pathway for career growth in the field. The table below provides a complete breakdown of New Jersey boiler licensing requirements, including each license name, type, and the minimum and maximum horsepower ranges allowed for operation.

Want a NJ Black Seal License But Don’t Have Experience?

No problem! Our Boiler Operator Training Program provides you the hands-on experience required by New Jersey, giving you everything you need to get a Black Seal License.

Out-of-State Experience and NJ Boiler Licensing

Boiler licenses from other states are not transferable to New Jersey, meaning you cannot carry over your license from a different state. You must still submit an application and pass the NJ state exam. However, your out-of-state experience is considered when determining which license you may qualify for, as long as it was gained within the last seven years. In some cases, you may even be able to skip a lower-level license. For example, if you have more than two years of experience working with boilers over 500 HP, you may qualify directly for a higher license. If your experience is with boilers under 500 HP, you would begin with the Black Seal High Pressure license. Our boiler licensing experts can review your background and guide you through the process.

If you are moving to another state, keep in mind that NJ boiler licenses are not transferable to other states. Each location has its own requirements, and not all states mandate licenses. For instance, Pennsylvania does not require a boiler license statewide, but the city of Philadelphia does. Always check the regulations in the area where you plan to work.

NJ State Exams

Although our boiler license courses are fully online, the State of New Jersey requires all licensing exams be completed in person at a state-approved testing site.

New Jersey Boiler License FAQs

How do I get a NJ Black Seal License?

To qualify for a New Jersey Black Seal License, you must complete hands-on boiler experience and pass the state exam. The Training Center’s Boiler Operator Training Program provides the required hours and exam preparation to meet NJ licensing requirements.

What are the different levels of NJ boiler licenses?

New Jersey issues White Seal, Black Seal (Low Pressure and High Pressure), Blue Seal, Red Seal, and Gold Seal licenses. Each level is based on boiler horsepower and system pressure, with higher seals requiring more experience and responsibility.

Do I need prior experience to get a NJ boiler license?

Yes. All New Jersey boiler licenses require documented hands-on experience in a boiler plant before you can qualify for the state exam. For the Black Seal license, The Training Center’s Boiler Operator Training Program provides the practical hours and preparation needed to meet this requirement and sit for the exam. Higher-level licenses (Blue, Red, and Gold) require additional years of experience beyond the Black Seal.

Can I transfer a boiler license from another state to New Jersey?

No, boiler licenses are not transferable across states. However, prior out-of-state experience may count toward qualifying for a higher-level NJ license if it was gained within the last seven years.

Where do I take the NJ boiler license exam?

All New Jersey boiler license exams must be taken in person at state-approved testing centers. While training can be completed online, the state requires exams to be administered onsite.

Are NJ boiler licenses recognized in other states?

No. NJ boiler licenses are not transferable outside the state. Each state sets its own requirements. For example, Pennsylvania does not require a boiler license statewide, but the city of Philadelphia does.

What jobs can I get with a NJ boiler license?

Licensed boiler operators and stationary engineers work in schools, hospitals, factories, and power plants. Higher-level seals can qualify you for chief engineer or plant management positions overseeing large facilities.

Is there a difference between a New Jersey boiler license and boiler certification?

In New Jersey, the correct credential is called a boiler license, issued by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The state does not issue a separate boiler certification, although many people use the term when they are referring to the license. If you are looking for boiler certification in New Jersey, what you actually need is one of the official boiler licenses (White Seal, Black Seal, Blue Seal, Red Seal, or Gold Seal). The Training Center’s programs prepare you for these licenses and the required state exams.
