How To Become a Licensed Plumber in NJ?

In New Jersey, earning your Master Plumber license requires a combination of approved education and documented field experience, as required by the State Board.

Step 1: Complete the Required Education

To qualify for a license, the State Board requires you to complete 576 hours (144 hours/year for 4 years) of Related Technical Instruction (RTI). This must be done through an approved education sponsor. The Training Center provides these official state-recognized hours as part of our Plumbing Training Program.

Step 2: Register as an Apprentice

You must register as an Apprentice with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Once enrolled, you will complete a 4-year apprenticeship working under a licensed Master Plumber to gain your required field hours.

Step 3: Advance to Journeyman

After completing your 4-year apprenticeship, you register as a Journeyman Plumber. You must work for one full year as a Journeyman to meet the final experience requirement.

Step 4: Pass the Master Plumber Exam

Once you have satisfied the education and 5 years of total experience (4 years apprentice + 1 year journeyman), you are eligible to take the three-part State Exam to become a Licensed Master Plumber.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I really need to attend a plumbing school to become licensed in NJ?

Yes. You cannot become a Licensed Master Plumber in New Jersey through field work alone. The State Board of Examiners requires a 4-year apprenticeship that includes 576 hours of Related Technical Instruction (RTI). Attending a state-approved plumbing school is how you fulfill this mandatory educational requirement.

Can I get a plumbing apprenticeship without going to school first?

It is possible but becoming increasingly difficult. Most plumbing companies prefer to hire apprentices who are “field-ready,” meaning they already know safety protocols, tool usage, and basic code. Graduating from a trade school program like ours makes you a much more attractive candidate for sponsorship because you require less initial training.

How long does it take to become a Master Plumber in New Jersey?

The entire process generally takes about 5 years. This includes completing a 4-year registered apprenticeship (working during the day, attending school part-time) followed by one year of work as a Journeyman. After meeting these experience and education benchmarks, you are eligible to sit for the Master Plumber exam.

What is the difference between a Trade School and a Community College for plumbing?

Time and focus. A community college degree often requires unrelated electives and typically takes 2 years. A dedicated plumbing trade school focuses 100% on the skills you need for the job, such as code, pipefitting, and installation. This helps you build job-ready skills faster and enter an apprenticeship sooner.

Does The Training Center’s Plumbing School cover all New Jersey counties?

Yes. We serve students from every county in New Jersey. While our physical plumbing lab is located in Branchburg, NJ, our hybrid training model makes our programs accessible to students statewide.

Is it too late to start a plumbing career as an adult in my 30s or 40s?

Absolutely not. We specialize in adult plumbing training, and many of our most successful students are “career changers” who bring maturity and work ethic to the field. The trade values skill over age, and because the demand for plumbers in NJ is so high, employers are eager to hire trained adult apprentices who show up ready to work.

Can I perform plumbing work in NJ as a handyman without a license?

New Jersey has strict plumbing licensing laws. In most cases, plumbing work that requires a permit must be performed by a Licensed Master Plumber (or an apprentice/journeyman working under one). If you’re unsure whether a job requires a permit, it’s best to contact your local building department or work under a licensed plumber.
