TradeReady CTE Program Overview

We partner with New Jersey high schools to provide affordable, flexible CTE programs that align with your academic calendar. The curriculum is structured across 8 core “Gears,” designed to build in-demand technical skills and industry knowledge. Lessons combine classroom instruction with hands-on labs, where student progress is verified through both written and practical competency checks. Graduates finish the course with the foundational training needed to succeed in advanced vocational education. Explore the 8 Gears of our CTE curriculum below.

Workplace Soft Skills & Career Exploration

Students start by mastering the attitudes that keep real crews productive; promptness, clear communication, and safety discipline. They also survey the earnings, credentials, and day-to-day tasks of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and plant-operations careers so every subsequent gear has purpose.

Students Learn:

  • Time management & reliability
  • Safety culture & situational awareness
  • Verbal and written communication
  • Workplace etiquette & team collaboration
  • Career Pathways and Licensing Ladders

Thermodynamics

Heat is invisible, yet it drives HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration. Students translate classroom science into trade language: conduction, convection, radiation, pressure, and phase change. They then prove each principle with live heat-transfer demonstrations. By linking theory to physical results, they understand the “how” every troubleshooter relies on to read gauges, predict system behavior, and explain findings to supervisors. In short, they learn to speak the language of heat so they can diagnose and solve problems instead of guessing.

Students Learn:

  • Modes of heat transfer
  • Pressure-temperature relationships
  • Specific heat & phase change
  • Energy efficiency and load calculations
  • Basic psychrometrics (humidity & comfort)

Intro to Electrical & Controls

Electricity is the backbone of multiple trades and essential to troubleshoot any system. This unit provides a hands-on introduction to electrical theory and basic wiring and low voltage troubleshooting. Students wire safe low-voltage circuits, read schematics, size conductors, and explore how thermostats, relays, and sensors control mechanical equipment.

Students Learn:

  • Voltage, current, resistance, Ohm’s Law
  • Series, parallel, and combination circuits
  • Thermostats, relays & basic control loops
  • Panels, fuses, motor protection, conduit basics
  • Intro to low-voltage diagnostics

Intro to Plumbing

Water, waste, and gas must flow safely and meet code. Students practice cutting, joining, and pressure testing PEX, copper, and PVC, while learning valve types and pump curves for use in residential and commercial systems.

Students Learn:

  • Water-supply and DWV (drain-waste-vent) systems.
  • Understanding proper tool use
  • Material Identification
  • Pipe materials & joining (solder, crimp, solvent-weld)
  • Pump and Valve identification & operation

Intro to HVAC

Buildings breathe through ducts, fans, coils, and filters. Students trace the refrigeration cycle, replace air filters, measure airflow, and balance comfort with efficiency, building skills they can apply directly to service calls.

Students Learn:

  • Component Identification
  • Refrigeration four-process cycle
  • Air-handler components (fans, coils, filters)
  • Static pressure & airflow measurement
  • Filter MERV ratings

Intro to Boilers & Plant Operations

Steam powers hospitals, campuses, and factories. Students will be able to break down system design and system types, along with components, combustion safety, boiler water chemistry, and the draft-fuel-water-steam systems that tie a plant together.

Students Learn:

  • Boiler Types and Systems
  • System components and breakdown
  • Critical safety devices
  • Boiler Operation Sequencing
  • Importance of Boiler Water Chemistry

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

Great techs don’t guess, they test. Students follow a troubleshooting workflow using the necessary tools on fault-injected simulated training boards. This translates to common HVAC, plumbing, and electrical related trade experiences.

Students Learn:

  • Troubleshooting Flowcharts
  • Wiring-diagram tracing
  • Symptom vs. cause thinking
  • Instrument selection & safe use
  • Documentation

Final Projects & Skills Testing

You’ll complete real-world tasks including troubleshooting drills and electrical testing as a final practical exam. Demonstration of proper tool selection, use and care along with practical simulated trials that are part of the final examination to graduate. The course ends with a written and hands-on skills assessment.

Students Learn:

  • Competency Checks
  • Practical Examination
  • Written Examination
  • Digital Transcript and Certification
