White Seal License Overview
The New Jersey White Seal license is required for boilers over 6 hp & up to 100 hp. The boilers have to have a pressure greater than 15 PSI to classify as high-pressure. This seal is sometimes referred to as the high-pressure special seal.
| License Name | License Type | Minimum Horsepower | Maximum Horsepower |
|---|---|---|---|
| White Seal | High Pressure | 6+ | 100 |
Requirements for White Seal License
The State of New Jersey mandates strict requirements for obtaining a White Seal Boiler License. Below outlines specific qualifications needed.
Experience Needed
The State of New Jersey requires 90 days experience in a place that has a boiler that is over 6 hp but not greater than 100 hp. Most people who sign-up for this particular program are owners of dry cleaning stores or operate boilers such as Fulton, Clayton, or other steam generators. Equipment is sometimes connected to autoclaves or devices that need steam rapidly.
Endorsements Needed
The White Seal License requires you to provide an endorsement from a manager from your place of employment for your application. Provide our school with NJ state inspection certificates. These certificates can be found hanging in your boiler room framed behind glass. They contain all the information that we need to properly fill out your application.
NJ License Exam
Although our boiler license courses are fully online, the State of New Jersey requires all license tests be completed in person at a state-approved testing site.
Course Curriculum and Topics
The White Seal License curriculum provides the core training needed to safely operate boilers up to 100 horsepower. Each module combines technical instruction with regulatory preparation, ensuring students understand boiler fundamentals, water chemistry, steam generation, combustion, and safety protocols. The program is designed to prepare operators for both the New Jersey licensing exam and real-world plant operations.
| Course Module | Description of Training |
|---|---|
| Core Principles & Heat Transfer | Lays the groundwork by introducing how boiler systems function and the science of heat transfer. Students review state codes, equipment components, and the fundamentals of boiler operation, creating the baseline understanding needed for safe and efficient plant management. |
| Plant Safety & Regulatory Practices | Focuses on hydronic system controls, low-water cutoffs, and other safeguards required by New Jersey standards. Training connects daily operation with regulatory compliance, ensuring students know how to protect both equipment and personnel. |
| Water Systems & Boiler Chemistry | Explores the importance of feedwater management and chemical treatment in extending boiler life. Lessons include boiler water chemistry basics, blowdown procedures, and techniques for preventing scale or corrosion to maintain reliable operation and system integrity. |
| Steam Generation & System Controls | Examines how steam is produced, distributed, and recovered. Includes instruction on steam applications, condensate recovery, and boiler room valves—such as safety valves—that regulate pressure and maintain system stability. |
| Combustion, Fuel, & Operating Sequences | Introduces combustion theory and fuel handling for smaller high-pressure systems. Students learn how draft impacts combustion efficiency, how different fuels are managed, and how sequence of operation ensures safe startup, continuous operation, and shutdown. |
| Exam Readiness & Next Steps | The final module reviews essential exam topics and gives students strategies for tackling licensing questions effectively. It also highlights how the White Seal License applies in real workplace settings and outlines opportunities for continued advancement in boiler operations. |
