Red Seal 1-B Engineer License Overview
The New Jersey Red Seal Boiler License (known as the Red Seal 1-B Engineer License) is required for boilers over 1,000 hp and greater than 15 pounds of steam pressure. If it’s a hot water heating system, the boilers must be over 160 psi with a water temperature over 250° F and have over 1,000 hp. In any plant that generates electricity with a prime mover that is over 100 hp and not greater than 300 hp requires a red seal license.
| License Name | License Type | Minimum Horsepower | Maximum Horsepower |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-B Red Seal | Stationary Engineer | 1,000+ | 3,000 |
Requirements for Red Seal License
The State of New Jersey mandates strict requirements for obtaining a Gold Seal Boiler License. Below outlines specific qualifications needed.
Experience Needed
Endorsements Needed
The Red Seal License application will require management endorsement and one engineer’s endorsement (personnel with a Blue, Red, or Gold Seal license). Out-of-state and Navy personnel can obtain a license, provided they have worked at least two years in a plant over 1,000 horsepower. However, the state would require a letter of endorsement from the company signed by management. This letter would state the boiler horsepower, all the information needed about the equipment, and the length of time you have operated the boilers. These applications must be approved on a case-by-case situation. An applicant can skip the Black Seal license with the necessary background to state requirements.
The Red Seal application also requires your boiler experience information, which can be found on boiler state inspection certificates located in your boiler room, framed behind glass.
NJ License Exam
Although our boiler license courses are fully online, the State of New Jersey requires all license tests be completed in person at a state-approved testing site.
Course Curriculum and Topics
The Red Seal Stationary Engineer License curriculum is designed for operators managing high-capacity plants and advanced boiler systems. Training combines technical instruction with exam preparation, equipping students with the knowledge required to meet New Jersey licensing standards. Each module builds both practical expertise and test readiness for this senior-level credential.
| Course Module | Description of Training |
|---|---|
| Orientation & Program Overview | Introduces the course format, application process, and licensing steps. Students also review boiler room fundamentals, plant piping, and instrumentation basics as a foundation for more advanced study. |
| Regulations & Safety Standards | Focuses on New Jersey Administrative Code and national safety rules. Lessons emphasize operator responsibilities, plant documentation, and compliance requirements that govern safe boiler operation. |
| Plant Systems & Equipment | Explores the key systems in stationary engineering, including boilers, auxiliaries, and integrated plant operations. Instruction highlights efficiency, reliability, and the practices needed for smooth daily operation. |
| Steam Systems & Superheaters | Reviews the generation, distribution, and application of steam. Students study steam quality, heat transfer, and how superheaters enhance both safety and plant performance. |
| Engineering Math & Efficiency | Covers essential formulas and calculations for stationary engineers. Students practice efficiency equations and applied problem-solving methods to support real-world operations and exam preparation. |
| Safety Devices & Pressure Controls | Details the operation of safety valves and pressure control devices. Training emphasizes their role in preventing unsafe conditions and protecting high-pressure systems. |
| Final Review & Exam Preparation | This final section ties together all previous topics while reinforcing regulatory compliance. Students work through practice scenarios and test simulations, ensuring readiness for the Red Seal licensing exam. |
