Boiler Operator Training in New Jersey

Also known as our Externship program, the Boiler & Plant Operator Training Program is the most comprehensive boiler training in New Jersey, designed to help students start a successful career in plant operations. This six month, hybrid program provides maximum flexibility, giving you the education and real-world experience required to work in the field. With multiple locations across the state, we provide top-rated boiler operator training to students throughout New Jersey. 

Regardless of your experience level, you will learn the trade of a stationary engineer through both classroom and hands-on training with commercial and industrial boilers. The curriculum is extensive covering all aspects of plant operations, including high and low pressure steam boilers, hydronic systems, water chemistry, fuel and combustion, preventative maintenance, and more. This is a complete boiler training program built to make you field-ready, equipping you with the exact experience, skills, and state-mandated license required to start a career as a New Jersey boiler and plant operator.

All students graduate with the NJ Black Seal High Pressure License. New Jersey requires a license for anyone working as a boiler operator, but real-world experience is needed to qualify. Program Details & Class Schedule

This 6-month boiler & plant operator training program delivers 300 total training hours, consisting of 20 sessions of hybrid (online and in-person) classes, plus hands-on training. Students obtain the state-required 120 hours of real-world experience with commercial and industrial boilers at a self-scheduled pace. The Training Center makes education convenient statewide by hosting this program at either our Branchburg, NJ campus or Cherry Hill training hub. You will gain the skills needed to start a career as a Boiler Operator, Stationary Engineer, and Plant Operator. The total cost is $6,000, with financing plans available. There are no hidden fees or added costs. Everything is covered in the tuition, including all books, materials, digital learning resources, and the Black Seal license exam.

Program Details:

  • Program Length: 6 months
  • Schedule: Weekly 2-hour classes (online or in-person)
  • Format: 20 sessions consisting of 16 classes (your choice online or in-person) and 4 in-person workshops, plus a minimum of 120 hours of self-scheduled hands-on training to meet state requirements.

Program Requirements

Our boiler and plant operator training program requires no prior experience around boilers. Students gain experience during our program by completing hands-on training under the direct supervision of our operations team at high pressure steam and thermal plants. The requirements are:

  • 18 Years or Older (by time of testing)
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Own a Smart Phone
  • Passing a Basic Pre-Test
  • Compliance to Personal Conduct Standards

The Training Center provides this boiler & plant operator training program in New Jersey, allowing you to attend classes online or in-person at either our Branchburg campus or our Cherry Hill training hub. We also partner with multiple facilities across the state for students to get direct hands-on experience with commercial and industrial boilers.

How The Boiler Program Works

Flexible Classroom Training

The program begins with 16 core classes designed to build your foundational knowledge as a stationary engineer. You will cover essential technical concepts, including boiler fundamentals, steam systems, water chemistry, and combustion. For maximum flexibility, you can choose to attend these weekly sessions either online or in-person at one of our locations.
 

In-Person Skill Workshops

To bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, you will complete four in-person workshops at our training labs. These hands-on sessions focus on practical skills like water testing, lockout/tagout safety, and diagnosing system faults on modern simulator boards. During all workshops, we maintain a 6-to-1 student-teacher ratio to ensure personalized learning.
 

Field Training and Experience

To meet New Jersey’s experience requirements, you will complete a minimum of 120 hours of hands-on training at our partnered boiler sites. Working under the direct supervision of licensed operators, you will operate functional commercial and industrial high-pressure steam boilers. This field training is self-scheduled, allowing you to complete your required hours at a pace that fits your life.
 

License Prep & State Testing

Once you complete the first three steps, you officially meet all state requirements to sit for your exam. In this final step, we provide comprehensive New Jersey Black Seal High Pressure license prep. This preparation covers N.J.A.C. codes, pressure vessel compliance, and logbook rules. You will then take your official exam at a State testing location. Upon passing, the State of New Jersey will issue your license, and you will graduate ready to work as a boiler and plant operator.
 

Boiler & Plant Operator Curriculum

Our Boiler & Plant Operations Training Program features a comprehensive curriculum of 16 modules designed to prepare students for careers as boiler operators and stationary engineers. The curriculum includes course topics such as boiler fundamentals, water chemistry, fuel and combustion, steam and hydronic systems, refrigeration basics, power generation, maintenance programs, and exam preparation for the New Jersey Black Seal High Pressure License.

Career Orientation

Introduces the field of plant operations, covering what professionals do, how boilers and plants work, and the habits of successful operators. Orientation also sets expectations for hybrid classes and hands-on training, provides overview of the online portal, and concludes with a success plan and first shift checklist.

Professional Fundamentals

Covers professional identity building, resume writing, job search skills, and digital etiquette. Training emphasizes communication, records, and logbooks to prepare students for a 24/7 operations culture.

Intro to Boilers

Provides a foundation in heat and energy, boiler types, core systems, and safety protections. Topics include feedwater rules, blowdown, chemistry basics, and level protection, with connections to real plant rounds.

Feedwater and Chemistry

Explains the importance of water programs, feedwater control, and system tracing. Includes practice in sampling, testing, and oxygen control to prevent scale and corrosion, leading into the Water Chemistry Workshop.

Steam and Hydronic Systems

Focuses on pressure, temperature, and saturated vs. superheated steam. Instruction covers hydronic vs. steam systems, loops, valves, and condensate management to ensure steam quality.

Fuel and Combustion

Explores fuel systems, burners, and combustion theory from startup to shutdown. Includes gas and oil trains, fuel-to-air control, ignition, purge, and flame safeguard basics.

Water Chemistry Workshop (in person)

A lab-based session that reinforces sampling, testing, and interpreting results. Connects data to operational actions that protect firetube and watertube boiler systems.

Draft and Control Systems

Covers draft fundamentals, stack effects, and induced vs. forced draft systems. Training also addresses instrumentation, controls, and interlocks that protect people and equipment.

Simulator Troubleshooting Workshop (in person)

Hands-on practice with full sequences of operation, wiring diagrams, and troubleshooting safeties and switches. Builds logical, step-by-step approaches to diagnosing lockouts and faults.

Refrigeration Basics

Introduces refrigeration fundamentals, vapor-compression cycles, chillers, and refrigerants. Connects system diagrams to real plant readings for practical understanding.

Refrigeration and HVAC Workshop (in person)

Applies refrigeration concepts to airflow, static pressure, capacitors, and troubleshooting. Live equipment demonstrations highlight how system problems affect performance.

Power Generation Basics

Provides an overview of plant cycles, gas turbines, and major components. Instruction connects electric power fundamentals to operator responsibilities in combined-cycle facilities.

Power Generation Advanced

Covers advanced concepts such as seasonal maintenance, HRSG heat flow, and generator capability curves. Emphasizes efficiency, operating decisions, and the owner mindset.

Problem Solving and Avoiding Accidents

Focuses on structured troubleshooting, problem prevention, and defensive habits. Develops operator skills that reduce risks and improve decision-making.

Operational and Maintenance Programs

Covers preventive and predictive maintenance, boiler inspection checklists, and documentation. Builds a plant-ready O&M playbook that aligns with manufacturer guidance and state rules.

NJ State Black Seal Exam Prep

Reviews exam domains, code references, compliance topics, and test-taking strategies. Includes quizzes, flash cards, and access to an Online Study Center for final preparation.

Rules and Regulation Compliance

Covers OSHA-aligned safety culture, lockout/tagout, confined space awareness, permits, and emissions basics. Emphasizes recordkeeping and preparing for inspections and audits.

Final Program Review

Integrates learning across fuel, draft, water, steam, and controls. Includes simulator drills, fault scenarios, oral boards, and employability preparation.

Final Program Exam and Graduation

Concludes with written and practical assessments across the curriculum. Graduation includes externship evaluation and assistance filing for the NJ Black Seal High Pressure exam.
