Boiler Operator Training in New Jersey
Also known as our Externship program, the Boiler & Plant Operator Training Program is the most comprehensive boiler training in New Jersey, designed to help students start a successful career in plant operations. This six month, hybrid program provides maximum flexibility, giving you the education and real-world experience required to work in the field. With multiple locations across the state, we provide top-rated boiler operator training to students throughout New Jersey.
Regardless of your experience level, you will learn the trade of a stationary engineer through both classroom and hands-on training with commercial and industrial boilers. The curriculum is extensive covering all aspects of plant operations, including high and low pressure steam boilers, hydronic systems, water chemistry, fuel and combustion, preventative maintenance, and more. This is a complete boiler training program built to make you field-ready, equipping you with the exact experience, skills, and state-mandated license required to start a career as a New Jersey boiler and plant operator.
All students graduate with the NJ Black Seal High Pressure License. New Jersey requires a license for anyone working as a boiler operator, but real-world experience is needed to qualify. Many people struggle because they cannot get licensed without prior experience. Our program solves this by requiring no experience and giving you everything you need to meet state requirements. You will graduate licensed and ready to work in the industry.
Program Schedule & Class Details
This 6-month boiler & plant operator training program delivers 300 total training hours, consisting of 20 sessions of hybrid (online and in-person) classes, plus hands-on training. Students obtain the state-required 120 hours of real-world experience with commercial and industrial boilers at a self-scheduled pace. With campuses in Wrightstown and Branchburg, NJ, plus a network of boiler facilities statewide, we make training convenient for students throughout New Jersey. You will gain the skills needed to start a career as a Boiler Operator, Stationary Engineer, and Plant Operator. The total cost is $6,000, with financing plans available starting as low as $115 per month. There are no hidden fees or added costs. Everything is covered in the tuition cost, including all books, materials, digital learning resources, and the Black Seal license exam.

Program Requirements
The boiler and plant operator training program requires no prior experience around boilers. Students gain experience during our program by completing hands-on training under the direct supervision of our operations team at high pressure steam and thermal plants. The requirements are:

Boiler & Plant Operator Program Curriculum
Our Boiler & Plant Operations Training Program features a comprehensive curriculum of 16 modules designed to prepare students for careers as boiler operators and stationary engineers. The curriculum includes course topics such as boiler fundamentals, water chemistry, fuel and combustion, steam and hydronic systems, refrigeration basics, power generation, maintenance programs, and exam preparation for the New Jersey Black Seal High Pressure License.
Career Orientation
Introduces the field of plant operations, covering what professionals do, how boilers and plants work, and the habits of successful operators. Orientation also sets expectations for hybrid classes and hands-on training, provides overview of the online portal, and concludes with a success plan and first shift checklist.
Professional Fundamentals
Covers professional identity building, resume writing, job search skills, and digital etiquette. Training emphasizes communication, records, and logbooks to prepare students for a 24/7 operations culture.
Intro to Boilers
Provides a foundation in heat and energy, boiler types, core systems, and safety protections. Topics include feedwater rules, blowdown, chemistry basics, and level protection, with connections to real plant rounds.
Feedwater and Chemistry
Explains the importance of water programs, feedwater control, and system tracing. Includes practice in sampling, testing, and oxygen control to prevent scale and corrosion, leading into the Water Chemistry Workshop.
Steam and Hydronic Systems
Focuses on pressure, temperature, and saturated vs. superheated steam. Instruction covers hydronic vs. steam systems, loops, valves, and condensate management to ensure steam quality.
Fuel and Combustion
Explores fuel systems, burners, and combustion theory from startup to shutdown. Includes gas and oil trains, fuel-to-air control, ignition, purge, and flame safeguard basics.
Water Chemistry Workshop (in person)
A lab-based session that reinforces sampling, testing, and interpreting results. Connects data to operational actions that protect firetube and watertube boiler systems.
Draft and Control Systems
Covers draft fundamentals, stack effects, and induced vs. forced draft systems. Training also addresses instrumentation, controls, and interlocks that protect people and equipment.

Operational and Maintenance Programs

NJ State Black Seal Exam Prep
Reviews exam domains, code references, compliance topics, and test-taking strategies. Includes quizzes, flash cards, and access to an Online Study Center for final preparation.
Rules and Regulation Compliance
Covers OSHA-aligned safety culture, lockout/tagout, confined space awareness, permits, and emissions basics. Emphasizes recordkeeping and preparing for inspections and audits.
Final Program Review
Integrates learning across fuel, draft, water, steam, and controls. Includes simulator drills, fault scenarios, oral boards, and employability preparation.
Final Program Exam and Graduation
Concludes with written and practical assessments across the curriculum. Graduation includes externship evaluation and assistance filing for the NJ Black Seal High Pressure exam.
